Moving to the North End goes smoothest if you avoid feast weekends in July and August, reserve a moving-truck parking spot 15 days to 8 weeks ahead, and measure your furniture against narrow stairs. Book movers early for September 1. The streets are old, narrow, and some are one-way, so a little planning saves your moving day.

Once you've picked the North End, the neighborhood is the easy part. The hard part is the move itself. You're getting a truck, a couch, and everything you own down streets laid out long before cars. Our family has run DJ Realty from 420 Commercial Street since 1950. Here's what we tell every new tenant before moving day.

Plan Around the Summer Feasts
Most weekends in July and August, the North End hosts an Italian religious feast. During major feast weekends, feast-related street closures can prevent the City from issuing moving permits at affected North End addresses. Dates and closures vary by year, so check before you pick a move date.
How the Feasts Work
Each feast honors a patron saint, with food stands, music, and processions through the neighborhood. St. Anthony's Feast is the largest. It's typically held in late August. Check the City's current moving-permit FAQ before scheduling a move.
| Feast | 2026 Dates | Streets Affected |
|---|---|---|
| St. Agrippina | Jul 30 to Aug 2 | Hanover St from #396, all of Battery St |
| Madonna Della Cava | Aug 7 to 9 | Hanover St from #396, all of Battery St |
| Fisherman's Feast | Aug 13 to 16 | All of Fleet St and Lewis St, 183 to 330 North St |
| San Gennaro | TBD | Paul Revere Mall on Hanover St |
| St. Anthony | Aug 27 to 30 | Thatcher St, N Margin St, Endicott St, parts of Cooper and Prince Sts |

Other Neighborhood Events
The Boston Calendar also lists a St. Joseph feast on Hanover St (July 24 to 26 in 2026) and San Gennaro on August 21 to 23. These aren't from the City's permit list. Treat them as neighborhood events to plan around, and ask the Parking Clerk whether they affect your street.
Moving in July or August? Call the Parking Clerk First
The City asks anyone moving into the North End in July or August to call the Parking Clerk first. The number is 617-635-2560. Call before you apply for a moving permit, and they'll tell you if your street is affected. Pay close attention to late August. St. Anthony's lands right before September 1, when most Boston leases turn over.
Why Some of Our Leases End July 31
If you rent in one of our buildings on Endicott Street or North Margin Street, your lease ends July 31, not August 31. That's on purpose.
Both streets are on the City's closure list for the St. Lucia and St. Anthony feast. Five of our buildings sit right on the route:
We end those leases a full month early. That way nobody moves in or out during the feast, whatever weekend it lands on. We've owned buildings on these blocks long enough to know a truck isn't getting through that weekend. Every other building we own follows the usual September 1 turnover.
Reserve a Parking Spot for Your Moving Truck
August and September 1 are the busiest moving days in the North End. The streets are narrow and one-way, and open parking is scarce even on a quiet Tuesday. A moving-truck permit isn't legally required, but it reserves legal curb space for your moving truck from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the permitted day.
What the Permit Covers and What It Costs
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Spaces | Two parking spaces |
| Time | One day, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Non-metered spaces | $69, two signs included |
| Metered spaces | Add $40, about $109 total |
When to Apply and Post Signs
- Apply online 15 days to 8 weeks before your move, or in person at City Hall, Room 224, 3 days to 8 weeks before.
- Post the signs at least 48 hours before 7 a.m. on moving day. The City recommends three days.
- Put fliers on cars within half a block for the two days before.
Moving From Out of State
The City mails the permit, signs, and fliers, usually within 7 to 10 business days. If you're moving from out of state, use a mailing address where someone can receive the permit materials. Make sure a local person is available to post signs and notices. The City notes that third-party sign-posting services may also be available.
Rules That Catch People Off Guard
- Permits are for moving trucks. Rental cars and minivans don't qualify.
- If a car is parked in your reserved spot, call Boston Police's non-emergency line at 617-343-4911.
- Moving trucks can't use Storrow Drive. The height limit is 10 feet, so plan another route into the city.
Measure Before You Move Furniture
Most North End buildings are historic walk-ups. Hallways are narrow, stairwells turn tight, and a sofa that fit your last place may not make it to the second-floor landing.
We provide floor plans and measurements for our available apartments, but we can't promise a specific piece will fit. Measure your three biggest items, usually the sofa, bed frame, and dresser. Compare them with doorway widths, hallway widths, and stair turns. If it's close, go with furniture that breaks down, or wait and buy after you move in.
Hire Licensed Movers and Book Early
For late-August and September moves, consider booking an experienced, properly licensed mover early. That's especially true if your building has stairs, narrow access, or limited curb space.
Massachusetts requires moving companies to be licensed, and the City's Moving guide has tips on choosing one. When you get quotes, ask whether the mover can apply for the truck permit and post the signs.

Frequently Asked Questions
When are the North End feasts?
Most weekends in July and August. Dates and closures vary by year. St. Anthony's Feast, the largest, is typically held in late August. Check the City's current moving-permit FAQ before scheduling a move.
Can I move in during the St. Anthony's Feast?
Probably not if your address is on the closure list. Feast-related street closures can prevent the City from issuing moving permits at affected addresses. In 2026, the list included Endicott St, N Margin St, Thatcher St, and parts of Cooper and Prince Sts. Call the Parking Clerk at 617-635-2560 to confirm.
Do I need a permit for a moving truck in Boston?
It isn't legally required, but it reserves legal curb space for your truck from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the permitted day. It costs $69, or about $109 if the spaces are metered. Apply 15 days to 8 weeks ahead.
Will my couch fit up the stairs?
Maybe. Many North End buildings are historic walk-ups with narrow halls and tight turns. We share floor plans and measurements, but we can't guarantee a specific piece will fit. Measure your largest items before you move.
Why does my lease end July 31?
If you rent on Endicott St or N Margin St, your building is on the St. Anthony's Feast route. Those leases end July 31, a month before the feast, so no one has to move while the street is closed.
