196 Salem Street
196 Salem Street is a five-unit apartment building in Boston's North End, a few doors from the Old North Church (193 Salem Street). Family-owned and operated by DJ Realty Management since 1950 — no broker fees.
A 1-bedroom, two 2-bedrooms, and two 3-bedrooms. Dishwashers in every unit; select units include in-unit washer/dryer and A/C.
The Building
A few doors from the Old North Church.
196 Salem Street sits on one of the North End's most story-rich blocks — a few doors down from the Old North Church (193 Salem Street), the landmark tied to Boston's Revolutionary "one if by land, two if by sea" lantern signal. Brick façades, narrow streets, and centuries of neighborhood life on the Freedom Trail.
Five renovated apartments across a five-story walk-up — a 1-bedroom, two 2-bedrooms, and two 3-bedrooms. Classic brick character paired with modern convenience: Amazon Key keyless entry, shared on-site laundry, and 24/7 surveillance cameras. Select units have in-unit washer/dryer or A/C.

FAQ
How do I apply?+
Apply online directly through our website — no broker, no in-person visit required. You'll need proof of income (last two pay stubs or offer letter), photo ID, and a credit check authorization. Lease signing happens electronically through our secure portal.
What do I pay at lease signing?+
First month, last month, security deposit, and a $50 application fee per applicant. No broker fee, no amenity fee, no other surprises.
Do you allow pets?+
Pets are reviewed case-by-case rather than blanket-approved or denied. Reach out and we'll talk through breed, weight, and number.
Which units have in-unit washer and dryer?+
Units 1 and 2 have an in-unit washer and dryer. Units 3, 4, and 5 use the building's shared on-site laundry — you don't need to leave the building.
Which units have A/C?+
Units 1 and 5 have A/C. The building doesn't have central air; A/C in those units is unit-specific.
What utilities am I responsible for?+
Tenants pay their own utilities — heat, hot water, electric, and gas. Heat and hot water are not included in the rent at this building.
Is there an elevator at 196 Salem Street?+
No. 196 Salem Street is a five-story walk-up. Each unit is on its own floor: Unit 1 is on the first floor, Unit 5 is the top-floor unit.
How does Amazon Key entry work?+
Every DJ Realty building uses Amazon Key for keyless entry. You and trusted Amazon couriers get access through the Amazon Key app, so your packages land safely inside the building entryway instead of on the sidewalk.
Are the buildings monitored?+
Yes. All DJ Realty buildings have surveillance cameras recording 24/7. Footage is reviewed only when there's a reported incident.
Who handles maintenance requests?+
Our in-house construction team. We have a Licensed Construction Supervisor and Licensed Real Estate Broker on staff, with a full-time crew based in the North End. For non-emergency requests, we respond by email or text within 1 to 24 hours. For emergencies (water, heat, security), we respond 24/7.
What's the lease length?+
Standard leases are 12 months. We do offer some flexibility for academic-year leases (9-10 months) on select units — ask if that's what you need.
Can I tour remotely or apply from out of state?+
Yes. Many of our tenants apply before they're physically in Boston. We do video tours, accept remote applications, and handle electronic lease signing. You don't need to be in Boston until move-in day.
What's the parking situation?+
Tenants are eligible for a City of Boston resident on-street parking permit in the North End. The building does not have off-street parking.
